The Fandom Project's goal, as written by Char (multishipperpirateking on tumblr) is:
"This is a project for anyone who’s ever tried and failed to explain how fandoms or online communities have affected them and why they are important. Whether to friends, family or boyfriends and girlfriends; this experience has shaped and changed your life in ways that others will say are odd or unusual or just not valuable, when you know that they aren’t.
Everything from debates to Conventions, to friends made and lives saved. Anyone who has been part of a fandom or online community will have seen wonderful things and had brilliant fun. Through the internet you will have made friends and connections with people all over the world, you have shared your artwork or writing or music making. You will have debated issues such as racism, the influence of media, sexism, Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Transgender rights and issues of politics, economics and religion. You understand Mental Health issues in yourself and others, and you may have been saved by the internet. And many of you will be relatively young, or have started these discussions when you were young and your views have been better informed and well rounded through exposure to people of all races, religions and locations. These are things that you may not talk about every day with your IRL friends and family, but if you could show them the value of your time here, then maybe you will be able to reach them and help them to understand.
The Project will be a collection of stories, testimonies, and collaborations that show exactly how our lives have been changed by fandoms - on the internet and in real life. But we need everyone to help. Whether you have a story to tell, a transcript of a chat, a video from a convention or a picture that sparked a valuable debate, we want to know and put it together into something that you can show family and friends and let them know that you are not alone.
Because you don’t just watch TV on the internet. "
I created the Tumblr for stories about good fandoms and how community is positive. I've expanded that to feature snapshots of good shows, good characters, and good messages.
I'm hoping for this forum to become a place for people who have the same mindset, that media and fandom can be a great force for good, to discuss the stories they love.
I want to keep the main threads free of as much negativity and controversy as possible, but I don't want to cut off those discussions. That's what the Serious Talk board is for.
Anyone can post, even guests, so don't be shy! Start threads, request new boards, and enjoy!
